Ford Repair: Transmisson Leak, rubber grommets, rubber washers

Question
I have a 1993 ranger 4 wheel drive with 112,000 miles problem small fluid drip at rear of trans. Fluid appears to be leaking from the top of the trans tail section. Is there a inspection plate on top that may be causing the leak? I have been told that this may be the trouble and that the bolts have rubber washers under the head. Your thoughts please? Thanks, Bill

Answer
Mr. Scott,

It sounds like you have a tail house shaft seal leak. Clean all the oil off the out side of the transmission to clearly see where the leak is coming from. If the leak is coming from where the drive shaft goes into the transmission, it is the seal. On top there is an inspection plate and it is possible that the rubber grommets or the inspection plate gasket could be bad. Hope that this helps and Good luck.
