Ford Repair: Ranger fuel injection, randy matthews, ford ranger

Question
I was just given an 86 Ford Ranger that won't start. It has a 2.9 L fuel injectied engine.
The timing is set right and gets good spark but won't do a thing when I turn it over.
I pulled a plug and it was soaked with gas.
It appears that it's just flooding out (something fierce)but I still don't get any kind of attempt to fire, not even a backfire.....nothing whatsoever as if there is either no spark or fuel.
I know nothing of fuel injection, 54 years old always been around cars and if it had a carb I would be alright.
Is there an adjustment or something somewhere I can mess with?
Thanks
Randy Matthews

Answer
theres no adjustment, and not much you can mess with.  I dont have any experience with 2.9L motors, but if you think its flooding and want to check if thats the problem you can check by turning the fuel pump off.  Look in a repair manual, cars will have a fuel pump shut off switch that is a relay for emergencies.  It usually goes off when the car gets hit but also can be turned off manualy.
