Ford Repair: ring and pinion gear, mickey thompson tire, ford f100

Question
I have a 79 ford F100 Truck. 460 engine, 280 comp cam, with Edelbrock 6500 intake. Headman headers, 750 Holley carburetor 31 x 16 50-15Lt ET street mickey thompson tire.  What ring and pinion gear should i go with to run at the track?

Answer
Billy-

If it were me, I'd run a low 4 seris gear...maybe a 4.11 or so.  That engine is gonna have a ton of power down low but it'll give up a little up top.  If the low end was bad I'd recommend a higher gear but with the low end torque of a 460 a 4.11 gear (I'm assuming you're running a 9" rear end) should work out just fine.  You could go a little higher if this is a track-only truck...but the whole idea of a ring and pinion swap is to get your engine into it's powerband quicker and a relatively stock 460's powerband is pretty low so I'd stick with that.  Hope this helps.
