Ford Repair: 96 Windstar Feels wobbly when I start moving, wheel bearings, drive axle

Question
My Windstar feels wobbly when I start going.  The wheels lugnuts were firm in place,  upon removing the wheel, I examined the drive axle,  There is about 30deg of play in the drive axle when I try to rotate by hand.  When I have the drive axle turning while on the stand, I can see a slight wobble in the drive axle end at the bootie closest to the engine.  not at the wheel.

My suspicion is that maybe the drive axle may have to be replaced.

What other things should I look at to determine?  I would like to repair my self if I am able.

Please let me know,  thanks.

Answer
Hi Mike,
It might be the axle, known as the left side and right side "half shaft". It could also be the wheel bearings or the transmition inner bearing. If most of the movement is at the trans. Have a trans shop check it out. If most of the movement is in the half shaft, you can replace it with a reman unit. It takes special tools and the vehicle must be lifted. I recommend that you take it to your favorite mechanic and have him check it out first. If after an estimate, it's just a half shaft, you can do the repairs yourself. If trans, check all shops in your area for best price.
