Ford Repair: timing new engine., ford repair, scan tool

Question
I just replaced the engine in my 1992 ford explorer 4.0l. This engine doesn't have a distributor. How do I set the timing?

Thanks

Mark

Answer
Mark,

The ignition system does not have any moving parts (no distributor) and all engine timing and spark distribution is handled electronically. The system has fewer parts that require replacement and provides more acurate spark timing. During engine operation, the EDIS ingnition module and the EEC-IV module calculate spark angle and determine the turn on and firing time of the ignition coil.

What this all means is that you need to take your vehicle to your mechanic or local Ford repair shop, have them put it on the scan tool and reset the timing with the computer as your ignition is all electronic. The timing can also be reset by the crankshaft damper. Hope this helps. If you need more help, please do not hesitate to ask me. Good luck.
