Ford Repair: (ABS) Light, abs sensor, frame rail

Question
Well, I have a 1999 Ford Ranger Pick up, 2 wd. About April of 2003 my abs light came on shortly after I had taken it through Marta. I have been driving with it on for approx. 1 year. Now its time to go through Marta again and I can't seem to find out why this light is staying on. I HAVE CHECKED ALL THE RELAYS AND THE FUSE AND THEY ARE GOOD. Does this ABS system have a censor on the brakes themselves? If so, Where is it located? What are all of the possible problems that would make this light stay on? I have two weeks before I go through Marta again. Also, Marta is required to hook all vehicles up to there computer. Will this abs light cause me to fail Marta?

Answer
Hi William,
There is an ABS sensor in the top of the rear end housing(2 wires), but the only way to tell for sure is to take it to your mechanic and have him "pull the codes" from the ABS computer. It could be the sensor, the ABS computer or the ABS valve located on the left side frame rail under you left foot. Any one of these could be the problem. The cheapest is the sensor, about $30 from a Ford dealed.
I don't know what Marta is but I assume it's a safety inspection in your state. You don't even need ABS if you don't want to fix it. It has nothing to do with your normal brakes and you shouldn't need it to pass. How many times have you made an ABS stop since you;ve owned the vehicle?
(none I'll bet)If the light bothers you, you can take out the bulb or put a piece of tape over the light.
