Question

Had transmission work done on 1992 ford taurus lx 11/1/03 since then its been re-done 3 times, this last time 2/16/04.
the machinic shop took my car off the premises and
the next day after working after hours to complete the job, they told me that now the hear a knocking noise in the engine, we argue and then he said he would fix it the next day he told me my engine was blown, engine working fine until then, now they put and engine in it after telling me a new motor find out its from the junk yard, and gave me a 90 day warranty, took the car home after being at there shop for 1 month, none of my power locks work any more, my mph gauge just spins around not accurate, put 11.00 dollars of gas in it and it was gone in 3 hours local driving 2 and from, at least thats what the guage rread.when i picked the car up they  said they put a new computer panel in it because they thought thats what was messing the trans, when i said im not paying for it, cause they never told me they were doing anything to that they took it out right there and put the old one in.. could that now have anything to do with the lock and gguages not working, andadvice on why my engine just happen to blown

Answer
Erica-

Let me say, while I can't come right out and say they're ripping you off, it sounds extremely suspicious.  First of all, the knocking noise they claim should not have occured suddenly after transmission work unless they installed the transmission improperly.  Secondly, if they did in fact replace your motor, tell you it was new, and then toss a junkyard motor in there, that's fraud and it's illegal.  It also sounds as though they either didn't connect your gauges at all or did it incorrectly.  As for the computer, it's only in exceptionally rare cases that a computer is faulty.  Plus your computer does not control your locks.  I'm not sure about that year of Taurus, but I don't believe the speedometer is routed through the computer, either.  I'd check with your local better business bureau and see if there's been any complaints lodged against them and proceed from there.  Like I said, it sounds VERY suspicious.  Hope this helps.
