Ford Repair: 1998 Ford Mustang Rear Differential and Chassis lubrication, steering linkage, rear differential

Question
Hi Steve,

I hope you can help me, I have been looking everywhere online, and the manuals I have aren't all that informative. I have a 1998 Mustang 3.8L V6. I am nearing 100k miles, so I have been looking into doing a pretty major maintenance session. I don't know about 2 things though:

1) Does the Rear differential lubricant need to be changed on a 1998 V6? I found one internet source that said the 1998 lubricant will last the lifetime of the car and that you shouldnt change it unless it needs to be serviced or the car has been submerged in water. I hear that you need to do it for the 94-97 V6, but the 98 should not need it?

2) When lubricating the chassis with EP grease, what points should be greased? I have a diagram that identifies the steering linkage joints, uper control arm bushings, ball joints, parking brake linkage, and steering arm stops. The diagram is from 1993 though, so I was wondering if I should stay away from certain parts or if I need to add any to that list?

Thank you very much!

Answer
Dylan-

The differential lube should be fine.  While it's not a bad idea to change it, it's not something that has to be changed like engine oil.  I'd just leave it be unless you notice problems with the rear end.  As for chassis lubrication, the manual you've got is really all you'd need.  The places on a car that need to be lubricated are pretty universal and, baring any significant frame or suspension changes (which the Mustang hasn't had since '79), you should be good with the manual from '93.  Hope this helps.
