Honda Repair: 2002 Honda CRV

My honda CRV (143000 miles) makes a whomp whomp sound that increases in volume as the car increases speed. Not particularly noticeable below 30mph, but considerable on the interstate. Any ideas where to start? Local mechanic did not think it was from the tires.

This sounds a lot like a tire. I know you said that the local one didn't think that's what is was from, but that is the most common cause of a problem like you are having. If you don't see any obvious problems then they would need to come off and checked carefully.
It could also be a problem within the drivtrain...cv axles, etc.
