91 honda civic dx with 136000 miles auto trans. Went out to get car warmed up but it had a dead battery, so I jumped it off and it started but as soon as you put it in gear it shut off and would not start again, daughter said it gets stuck in park also.

Rick, start by replacing the battery. Then have the alternator evaluated for proper performance. Usually free at a auto electric repair shop or an alternator, battery or starter specialist. Sounds to me that the getting stuck in Park issue could be a direct result of the battery not having enough power - to engage the rear brake lights and send the signal to the gear selector to release the 'shift from Park' saftey feature. Fix the electrical first then if you are still having a problem come back here and i will give you more details on how to evaluate the second issue further.
