Honda Repair: honda rear balance shaft, crankshaft pulley, balance shaft

Question
I HAVE A 93 ACCORD WHEN THE TIMING BELT BROKE IT TOOK OFF THE LOWER BELT AS WELL!  IT DID END UP BENDING A COUPLE OF EXHAUST VALVES WHICH WHERE REPLACED! I ASSEMBLED BOTH BELTS AND HAVE NO FIRE SO I THOUGHT THE REAR BALANCE SHAFT MAY BE OFF,  THERE IS A KNOCH IN THE SPLASH SHIELD ON THE GEAR AND A V MARK ON THE HOUSING, WHICH I ALIGNED UP AND THE SCERW DRIVER SLID INTO THE REAR SHAFT RETAINING OR ALIGNING HOLE. NOT SURE IF THATS MY PROBLEM OR? I HAVE NO SPARK AT ALL NOT LIKE A MISALIGN WHICH SOMETIMES WILL GIVE A SPARK THATS OUT OF TIME, WITH OUT A FOR SURE MARK WHERE DO YOU SET THE REAR SHAFT? SEEMS LIKE IF I TURN THE SHAFT ONE FULL TURN THE GEAR ONLY TURN 3/4  NO SURE HOW ELSE TO SET,  ANY HELP?

Answer
George, the timing on all Honda's is very straight forward. Set the #1 cylinder to TDC. Or pull the spark plug out and insert a long handled screwdriver in there. When turning the crank manually the screwdriver will start to go down then up = stroke. When all the way up check your mark on the crankshaft pulley. Should be a dash (red) and pointing at the mark on the plastic timing belt cover. This is TDC. If no mark visible you are 180 degrees out of stroke so go 1 more rotation.

As far as no spark is concerned this has to do with a completely seperate area of the engine. Out of time engines will still have spark. If no spark then evaluate the distributor and power to the distributor. Also clear your check engine codes. Might be the ignition control module - ignitor - inside the distributor itself. Not uncommon for this component to go out after sitting for a period of time or traumatic event to the engine.
