Honda Repair: 1998 Honda CR-V, honda cr v, initial diagnosis

Question
I know really nothing about cars but I have been having problems with my 1998 Honda CR-V. Sometimes I will turn it on and will be driving down the road and the engine will just shut off. Other times I will start it up and it will immediately shut back off. It seems to be sensitive to how it is turned on I guess. But in all reality I have no idea why it does this. When I am driving and it turns off I can sometimes put it into neutral and turn it back on and it is ok but this morning, it was raining all last night and this morning, it would just not stay engaged. If anyone can give me any insight as to what is wrong I would be greatful

Answer
Julie, having the vehicle turn off when you are driving can be very dangerous. Unfortunately since you did not provide me with very many specific details I cannot provide you with a proper diagnosis. I can tell you to take the vehicle to AutoZone or other reputable auto parts store and have them read the check engine codes. This will help you find out what area you need to focus on with the repair. Or take the vehicle to a trusted and knowledgable mechanic. Should take them 15 minutes to 30 minutes to diagnose the problem(s). Most shops will provide you with an estimate and the initial diagnosis should be free. But, be wary once you give them permission to repair they almost will always find something else to replace and/or repair. This is an up-sale. You are there to fix the problem at hand not refurbish everything to new.

Remember each time your engine quits or stalls there will always be a related check engine code to go with the error.
