Honda Repair: Engine runs but dies at low rpms, adjustment screws, fuel mixture

Question
1989 Honda Accord Sedan LX 5 sp manual, 2 brl carb, 121K miles.  Just purchased. Car has sat for a long time.  Seems to be kept in excellent cond.  Fluids look great, Starts fine. Started and ran it off and on for hours.  If I take my foot off accelerator it dies.  Engine runs fairly smooth but I can hear slight misses or perhaps off-time firing... Does not back-fire.  Dies at anything under 1,000 rpms.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Answer
Gary, like any vehicle with carbs they will come out of tune by sitting for long periods. There are a couple of adjustment screws on those carbs. One is the idle of course. The others probably control fuel mixture or cold start idle. Whichever the one you are interested in is the idle, for now.

Before you can adjust the idle screw for the proper RPM you need to check the timing. Timing needs to be 100% on the money. A digital timing light is really what you need. Set timing perfectly.

Now you can adjust the idle screw. Under the hood, on a sticker, should be some guidelines for setting the idle. Engine warm, headlights on, heater on, etc. I think on those Accord's idle is 800 RPM's +/- 50 RPM's.
