Honda Repair: 1985 Honda prelude automatic trans., 1985 honda prelude, honda prelude

Question
QUESTION: Travis, my Honda prelude has an automatic transmission, not manual. Please refer back to my correspondence with you concerning my Honda Prelude.Awaiting your advice and reply. Thanks, Frank

ANSWER: Frank, sorry about the reply. Been answering alot of questions lately. But, there is some adjustments to be made from the shift linkage and the throttle kickdown cable. These adjustments might help the crunchy noise a bit. Ease of release from the transmission to the shifter is your first adjustment then drive it going through all the gears. If it feels comfortable to you. The throttle kickdown cable can be tested as far as certain RPM's when it should be kicking down to a passing gear. Other than that the timing should be 100% on the mark and idle too.

QUESTION: Travis:
Ease of release from the transmission to the shifter is fine. As far as the shifting of the transmission,it does it like clockwork. It shifts through the gears as smooth as silk.
This aggrevating problem with the transmission making a crunching grinding sound for a moment happens only when I am making the initial manual shift from park into drive. The noise occurs when I am passing over the Neutral position(just before I engage D4) and then again at the moment I engage it back into Park. This is a noise that may prevent my selling the car because someone may think something is wrong with the trans. It changes gears perfectly and when going up a big hill it kicks down into the lower gear as it should. It seems fine except for the noise I told you about.Your opinion will be appreciated.  Frank

Answer
Frank, my fresh transmission and torque converter in my 1991 Honda Civic 4D does the same thing. These older Honda's just make this sound when going from 'N' down to 'D'. You shouldn't have any problems selling a car that is 25 years old and you have so many receipts to prove your work. You are going to run across that really picky customer but maybe only 2 out of 10. Whichever your customer will know what he is getting into when seeking a vintage Prelude like yours. Best o' luck my friend and i hope that answering some of your questions has helped.
