Honda Repair: 1993 Honda Civic, 1993 honda civic, honda civic

Question
I just bought a 1993 Honda Civic yesterday.  When we test drove it, it started right up and when we went to pick up the car a few days later the car started right up.  I took the car home and now it wont start.  When we try to start it, the car makes a loud noise and it doesn't turn over.  The radio turns on however, so I do not think it is my battery.  If we push start it, the car turns on, but after the car is push started and we drive it, as soon as we put a blinker on the loud noise starts up again.  I have no clue what is wrong with this vehicle.  It has 166,000 miles on it, and is a 4-cylinder.  Any suggestions would be a helpful start.  Thank you.

Answer
Charlene, since you did not describe the noise it makes when it is failing and when you push start the car and fires up, tells me that this is an electrical issue. Look at the battery and look for a small white sticker with a date/yr on the sticker itself. If it is 5 years or older replace the battery. Or, you can remove the battery and take to a Auto Parts retailer having them charge it. Or, charge it yourself but do this properly. Whichever you do if the battery doesn't hold a charge it is bad. Next take to an electrical repair shop and have them test your Battery, Alternator, and Starter. This should be a free service and will tell you if those are working properly. It is common when just purchasing a vehicle for it to have a bad battery due to long periods of sitting because the owner does not want to put a lot of miles on it.
