Honda Repair: 1988 Civic 4WD wagon tachometer failure, 4wd wagon, diagnostic time

Question
The tachometer in my 1988 Civic RT-4WD wagon is behaving badly, fluttering 2-4K/min at lower speeds but fluttering 2-8K/min at constant highway speeds in highest gear. What would be the best way to get a functioning tachometer, please?

Answer
Hi Henry, Some diagnostic time is required. Check all underhood grounds (-). There should be [3] main grounds. Battery to frame rail, frame rail to transmission, and engine to core support. Verify with a test light that all fuses and underhood fuses are working properly. Also you can remove the Gauge/Instrument cluster and verify all plugs are properly in place. Considering the age of your car you could just go to a Honda recycler and replace the Gauge/Instrument Cluster. Your last resort would be to take the car to a Electrical Specialties shop for more diagnostics telling them what you have done so far. Let me know if this helps...
