Honda Repair: 1992 honda accord ex AT, crankshaft pulley, worst case scenarios

Question
Hi,

I have a 1992 Accord EX that has 204k miles on it. It needs a timing belt repair and the dealer says the alternator bolts are seized and that if they break it, it'll cost an extra 689 to replace the alternator assembly. Also, they claim that a bunch of other parts are rusted and may break: the tensioner, crankshaft pulley... Are they trying to rip me off? If so, do you recommend any reputable shops in the boston area to do this repair?

Answer
Hi Akin, the Dealer is trying to avoid responsibility if they break anything and are using the "rust" issue as a scapegoat. They are being honest with you though by explaining possible worst case scenarios. If the Alternator bolts/nuts are rusted they should be replaced. These are cheap parts even purchasing them from the Dealer. For difficult/rusty/seized bolts I use PB Blast which can be purchased from any Auto Parts store. It comes in a (WD-40) style of can and is applied by spraying onto area and waiting a couple of minutes. I have never been unable to remove any bolt when using this product. The crankshaft pulley bolt is the most difficult to remove. It is big and requires a lot of tension to remove. The belt tensioner pulley should be replaced anyway. You should also have your water pump replaced and camshaft seals when doing the timing belt. You can purchase the new Alternator bolts from Honda and then take them to a Auto Battery and Electric shop and they should be able to Remove and Replace the hardware for you for a minimal cost.

I am on the West coast so I do not know of any repair shops in the Boston area. I hope this helps...
