Honda Repair: 93 Honda civic overheating, hose clamps, excess air

Question
I have a 93 civic that started overheating. I replaced the thermostat and bled the valve. It still overheated. I was told that the guy who sold me the thermostat gave me wrong temp, so I installed a 170. It has not overheated yet, but it idles rough now. Any suggestions? It used to loose water before I changed the thermostat

Answer
Hi Howard, when servicing the cooling system of any Honda they can be quite temperamental. By just replacing the thermostat and bleeding the valve and still having it overheat, doesn't surprise me. I would also recommend inspecting all hoses for damage or bulging. Inspect all hose clamps. Flushing the radiator and refilling with new fluid. And properly bleeding the system of excess air. With all these done and you still overheat i would suspect water pump.

Question for you Howard? Did you install the thermostat properly? Did you know you can install the part backwards? Which would cause the thermostat to not open. Did you replace the grommet or reuse the older one? These can all be contributing factors to your problem.
