Honda Repair: 1989 Honda Accord LXi 2.0 oil pump replacement, crank pulley, gasket maker

Question
What all do I need to do to replace the oil pump. I just bought this 89 Honda.
They said they thought the oil pump was leaking. I cant tell for sure if that is
where the oil is coming from but it could very well be. I have never owned a
Honda before so I am looking for info. Can you help.

Answer
Hey Harold,
The oil pump on a Honda isn't to hard to change, I believe it calls for 4 hours in the book. You'll need to remove the crank pulley, so you will definitely need a puller. Then remove the  lower half of the timing cover. Then you'll need to remove the timing belt from its sprocket. I believe there are 6 bolts that hold the pump in place. Once you have the pump out remove the cover on the inside of the pump (5 or 6 screw) and check out the gears. Look for stress cracks or uneven wear on the gears. If there is a problem with the gears buy a new pump. I also recommend using Honda bond gasket maker instead of using regular RVT silicone. Good luck and if you have any further questions feel free to message me.
