Honda Repair: 1996 Civic DX CV boot, cv boot, slide hammer

Question
Hello, my front drivers side cv boot has cracked and needs replacing. Is there any tips you can suggest to make this an easy fix?
Thanks a lot.

Answer
Hi Michael,

Industry practices and standards say that once a cv boot is opened for 12 hours it is considered contaminated with dirt, road grime, moisture etc. and requires replacement. Usually you can get a replacement axle at any good auto parts store for $50.00 - $75.00 or check on ebay! Most aftermarket manufacturers have a lifetime warranty as well. So for the most bang for your buck that is what I recommend. If you really want to save and just do a boot than the outer joint need to be separated from the shaft. I always use a slide hammer but a believe you can use a regular hammer but be careful not to damage the joint. The joint retaining clip should be replaced and don't forget the new grease that is included with the boot kit. Again the axle is more cost effective over the life of the vehicle and is much less labor intensive to do. Hope this helps! Let me know what you decide and please feel free to contact me in the future if you need anything!
