Honda Repair: 95 civic sporadically gets stuck in park, brake light switch, shift lock

Question
I have a 95 Civic with automatic trans and every once in a while my car, once on, will not shift out of park.  More specifically the button on the shifter will not depress.  I can turn the car off and use the shift lock release to put the car in neutral then start it, but if its already on in park the button sticks.  Also, (and I don't know if this is a factor or just a separate problem) I've just noticed the brake lights on my car only work when I'm in park, but all the bulbs are fine

Answer
Hi Ally,

Sounds like you have a brake light switch that is failing intermittently. It is a very inexpensive part and can be put in by anyone that is mechanically inclined. I do believe you can pick one up at any aftermarket parts store (Napa,Salvo,Advanced,PepBoys) instead of going to the dealer. However the dealer parts are usually better but in this case it shouldn't matter. Hope this helps! Feel free to contact me in the future if you have any additional questions and please let me know the outcome. Have a great day!
