Honda Repair: 93 honda civic, moderate hits, gearshift lever

Question
I have a 93 civic with automatic trans that won't shift out of park when the car is first started. I have to shut the car off and use the key to insert into the shift lock release so I can move the shift lever to neutral, start the car, then shift to drive. All gears work fine while driving and the gearshift lever goes into park just fine when arriving at my destination. I just cannot shift the lever out of Park when first starting up. Thank you.

Answer
99.9% chance: replace the brake switch behind the pedal :).

very rarely the solenoid in the console will go out, but go ahead and replace the brake switch. they are cheap and only require a 12mm wrench to take out.
you can have someone check the brake lights while u hit the brake. if the brake lights are not coming on then it is definitely the switch, but that really isnt guaranteed.
perhaps try tapping the pedal and see if you can here the console 'click'. or hold the pedal down and give some moderate hits to the center console and see if the solenoid is sticking. it is just to the left of the shifter.

but over the net i can only recommend changing that switch and going from there if neither of those work.
