Honda Repair: 1994 Honda Accord, valve cover gasket, cv axle

Question
My daughter's 1994 Honda Accord has 150,000 miles and sprang a major oil leak.  She was on the interstate about 100 miles from home and we told her to just keep putting oil in it until she got home.  We took it to a repair place and they had to replace the timing belt, 2 oil seals, 1 oil seal retainer and 2 serpentine belts for $734.  Still leaking we took it back.  They then replaced a valve cover gasket and tightened some bolts (also replaced CV axle and brake pads) another $380.  It's still leaking.  Oil seems to be all over her car and black soot is on the back.  What do you think?????

Answer
yeah unfortunatly with 150k miles those things did need replacing. so dont be too upset that you replaced the stuff and it still leaks. i would say start with the obvious. is the drian plug leaking? check the oil filter on the back side of  the engine. take it off and make sure there arent 2 seals on it. this is a verrry common mistake. also check to see if your oil pan is leaking. if you feel safe doing it. try to put it on jack stands and start it and see where it is leaking. if it is only leaking while on it may be a seal or an actual hole in the block. if it is constantly leaking it could be  a broken gasket or seal. check around the valve cover on the top. if you want you can actually remove it in less that 2 minutes with a 10 millimeter socket and ratchet or wrench. but i would almost bet there is an extra ring on the filter or the plug is leaking.
