I have had my car since new and recently have been having problems.  Earlier this summer it ran rough like not getting gas, then after parked would not start.  This happened a couple of times then not again.  My mechanic said it was probably the heat and pressure in the tank.  Shortley after that I drove it continuously for two weeks on a 4,000 mile trip with no problems..  Saturday I drove it after having the power steering pump replaced with no problems.  Yesterday (Sun) I ran very rough threatened to stall and after I parked it it would not start.

I removed the gas cap and let it sit, still no start, acted like it wasn't getting fuel.  Let it sit another hour it started several times but would not keep running.  Finally after another 11/2 hours it started and ran fine til I had to stop at a light.  It stalled again, it did this all the way home, took me 11/2 hours to drive about 6 miles constantly stalling when I slowed down or stopped, then just as I was almost home the headlights also went out.

Everything else seems to be working fine all other lights etc, I checked the fuses under the hood they all look fine, not burnt.  I haven't tried to start it today as I've probably about worn out the starter after last night.

What in the world could be wrong?  Electrical is my guess maybe not allowing fuel pump to work right along with the headlights.  This seems very strange to me.
Thanks for your help

When or if your car starts again pull off the positive lead of the battery and tell me if the car dies. if so its the alternator, is it fuel injected or carb?

Thanks, I have not been able to get it started, however if the battery stays up would it be the alternator?  Why would only the headlights go out and no other.  If there is enough power to start and restart that would not be the problem would it?  The battery is not down or dead.  It is fuel injected, I think it may be some kind of relay or wire or computer thing.  Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks again,
Karen

ok you have to reset the computer, to do this you find and pull the hazzard fuse and wait for 15 minutes and replace fuse and this resets the computer, if this doesnt work pull the carpet from passengers side to reveal a steel cover, turn the ignition on and tell me how many times between each break the red light blinks on the ECU and then i can tell you exactly whats wrong

Thanks again, I tried the hazard fuse, that did not work.  I will try the other this week-end however your instructions were not complete.  I pull up the carpet and reveal exactly what?  Then how do I get into the steel whatever? And where is the ecu where is the red light? I really appreciate the help, the dealer would not give me any ideas over the phone, I cannot have it towed there then find out I can't afford the repair right now, then have it towed back.

Thanks so much
Karen

Answer
sorry LOL
under the carpet is a steel plate with 4 10mm nuts holding it on, it takes up all the front floor space,This is the ECU and in the middle of it is a hole which shows the red light when you turn on the ignition, turn on the ignition and watch the ECU light blink, make sure you have a piece of paper with you to write down how many times it blinks and stops, hope this is alot clearer for you
