Honda Repair: 1990 Civic LX Sedan buring oil, 2 quarts, hope ive

Question
Hi Rusty,

I recently replaced the head on a 1990 Civic. The engine has burned oil since the replacement. The engine has 165,000 miles , do you think it is the valve guides or rings creating the burning oil. I noticed in another post that you mentioned "not to replace the head"? Could you expound on that. Obviously, I've created the problem that you mentioned, that the engine would start to smoke. Should I have the deck area of the head resurfaced? Rebuild the bottom end? (pistons, rings, crank, bearings) I've already put a new timing belt, oil pump, water pump, and clutch into this car, it runs well with the exception of the "007 smoke cloud" behind. Seriouly, the cloud isn't that bad, but I am putting about 2+ quarts of oil in between fillups.

Thanks Rusty, for your expertise.

Answer
Well i have to say throw away the head and get a secondhand one, When those heads start letting oil thru valves they are no good it doesnt matter how well your guides are the valve rips the valve sleave and gets worse( the engine has been seriously over reved at some stage) Is it smoking from all 4 cyls or just a few, if it is all 4 then you need rings so you might as well have to rebuild, silly taking the head off (NASTY TO REPAIR) hope ive been of some help Thanks
