Honda Repair: Timing Marks, crank pulley, honda civic sedan

Question
Hi Craig,
I have a 1987 honda civic sedan with a 1500cc carbureted engine and an automatic trans. I am trying to adjust the timing. The manual and car sticker refer to 15 degrees btdc as the proper timing setting in gear with the air cleaner thermo valve vac hose plugged. Thats fine but there is no indication what the marks on the crank pulley mean. There is a pair of white marks (one on each side of the alt belt on the pulley) and then to the left a few inches away are a series of white and red marks on the inner edge of the crank pulley. Looking at the pulley from the drivers fender and counterclockwise from the main pair of marks I believe it goes white, red, white, white. Which is the 15 degree mark and what are each of those marks value eqiuvilant to? Thanks very much in advance for your help. Eric

Answer
The single white mark is direct top dead center.  The red mark between the two white marks is the 15 degree mark.  So if you are using a timing light, adjust it to the red mark and it will be dead on.  If you are using a timing light with the advance feature, set it to the single white mark.
