Honda Repair: 99 Civic CV Joint?, cv shaft, cv joint

Question
I have a 99 Civic LX, Manual, 86K.  For the last year or so it "pops" around the front left wheel, if I let up on the clutch too fast, or the car lurches.  Also, in 1st and 2nd, i hear that left front wheel sh-sh-sh like there's something rubbing.  I don't notice it at higher speeds, though.

So, I thought it was a shock or strut or somethign and took it to the tire store.  Here's what I was quoted:

Left Front CV Shaft $109
Differential Bearing Replacement $600
Labor 4hrs $240
---------------------------
TOTAL INCL TAX  $993

They also suggested I get the clutch replaced too, but I was in shock (thinking it would be the shocks), and didn't have them run an estimate on that.  We were up under the car and he showed me the part, and he rattled it around.

I totally love my car and do my best to take care of it (I'm a grad student, so I'm darn broke, though), and this is the most significant estimate I've ever had.

I definitely plan on getting a second opinion, but do these items sound reasonable to you?  Is there anything I can do to confirm the necessity of Replacing the Differential Bearing?  If all of the above are probably necessary, should i just get the clutch replaced too?  How much should I reasonably expect to pay?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Answer
Dan, as far as the CV joint making a pop noise I have had similar noise concerns so it could be? I'd make sure the sh sh noise isn't just the backing plate(shield behind the rotor)rubbing on the rotor. Just push back or pry out the shields away from the rotor and try it. Are you sure they meant differential bearing(s)and not wheel bearing? In order for them(diff bearings)to be replaced the transmission has to be removed. I doubt its those bearings but unless I inspect the car it's possible. If those bearings were worn they normally eat the seals and you would develop a transmission oil leak and make a lot of noise. IF the diff bearings are worn it takes very little time to replace the clutch once the trans is removed. I would definitely get a second opinion preferrably from a HONDA dealer where I'm sure they can tell you exactly what's wrong. I think they're missing something. Let me know, RICK
