Honda Repair: 1997 Honda Civic EX, doom and gloom, electric sensors

Bill, My daughter owns a 1997 Honda Civic Ex. Yesterday as she was driving the check engine light came on ,went off , came on and then the cars engine was still running but no drive power.Engine runs great but no reverse drive ect.My question is. are there electrical components that control the transmission or does this sound like transmission shot. Car was running great until this happened. No trans whine, bucking, slipping etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes, they do use an electronic control module, electric sensors and solenoids to control shifting. You may have a problem with the linkage and I would check to make sure there is transmission fluid. Hard to say what is wrong, I don't want to give false hope or doom and gloom. Sorry I can't be of more help.
