Honda Repair: 90 Accord Speedometer, S Light, How Bad is it?, vss, transmission problem

Question
I have a '90 Accord and am trying to have it last for the winter.  Yesterday the 'S' light started blinking then stopped.  Today it started blinking again and then the Speedometer and Odometer stopped on the highway for about fifteen minutes.

I know that the S light means that there is a transmission problem, could it just be the VSS or is it likely much worse?  If it's just a VSS approximately how much do those cost?  Other than those problems the car seemed fine, is it ok to drive?

I just need to know if this is a problem big enough to have to scrap the car or if it is likely a minor problem.

I appreciate any help that you could give.

Craig:
The VSS is about $130 - $150. Hard to say what is wrong, it could be something upstream from the VSS that causes it to not work. It could just be the VSS. You might want to take it in and have Honda diagnosis the problem (about $50-$60) and decide from there, I've done that before and fixed he car myself. I would at least spend a few bucks before scrapping the car.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
