Honda Repair: screeching noise when turning, 98Civic unstable, auto mechanics, tune ups

Question
Hi Bill,
I have a 98 Civic EX.  I usually try to get all the oil changes and tune ups at scheduled times. My car is making a hi pitch screeching noise when I turning the wheel too far either way, but the PSF is full.  Also, the car is shaking when I drive.  Even just 10 or 15 mph.  I haven't been driving it much bc when I do, it feels like it is going to shut off at any moment, but it hasn't yet.  I want to take it to the shop here, but I want to have an idea of what is wrong.  Auto mechanics tend to take advantage of females when they go alone. The car has recently had a tune up and oil change.
Also, I know that it is time for new tires.  When I drive it also feels as if at any second, the car is going to veer off by itself, or may not stop, but it does so the breaks must be working.

Please help,

Thanks,
Nicole

It sounds like you have a few different problems. The screeching from turning may be a loose belt or there might be a problem with the p/s pump. I'm not sure about the shaking, is it coming from the engine or the tires?  If you know you need new tires go a head and get them, that may take care of the shaking problem. The tires may be out of balance and it causes them to bounce along the road or you may have some suspension parts that need replacing. Ask around about where to take (and not to take) your car. You generally want an ASE certified mechanic. Make sure they are familiar with Hondas and ask for an estimate before agreeing to the repair. You may just ask for a diagnostic evaluation and then take the care somewhere else to see if the evaluations agree. I would stay away from tire and muffler type shops, find an auto repair place, their business relies on you coming back for all your repairs.
Hope this helps.
