Honda Repair: 99 Accord LX, independent shop, honda dealer

Question
Hi There, my 'Check Engine' light came on and I went to get the code read.  The code is P 1457, which is 'Unable to Pull Vacuum in Tank'.  What does this mean and if it's the fuel pump, is it hard to replace without having to spend $$$$ at the Honda dealer?  Thank you.  Jo

Answer
Jo:
Most likely you have a problem with your canister; this does not have anything to do with your fuel pump. The canister is not too difficult to replace, but if you go to the dealer you will spend quite a bit more than going to an independent shop. The only thing that you have to be aware of is that the code only gives a symptom of the problem, your canister may not be bad, and it is just the symptom. That is why you really need to trust the place you take your car, if you trust the dealer, spend the extra money and know that the car will be fixed correctly. An independent that does not know what he is doing would cost you more in the long run.
Good luck.
