Honda Repair: accord tranny, honda accord lx, time estimates

Question
my 1999 4 cylinder accord sedan became ill this afternoon. the manual transmission (5 speed) may need replacing. if my feebily informed hypothesis is correct, what might the damage be? cost and time estimates, plus any advice i might need are greatly apprecited. thanx! p.s. the instructions i didn't read tell me to add this info: 1999 honda accord lx sedan, service history almost nill(i know, tsk tsk),just as i shifted into 5th gear my tachometer shot up w/no response. i re-engaged the clutch shifted to neutral and tried 5th again, then 4th, 3rd, ect. clutch feels fine, nothing really seems differant at all, excect the afore mentioned rpms+whining=nothing problem. thanks again.

Phil:
What you describe does sound like you have a bad transmission. It sounds like the synchronizer is out. You are probably looking at $1200 to $1500 and several days of the car being torn apart and put back together.
Good luck, hope I'm wrong.
