Honda Repair: can clutch repair affect speedometer?, vehicle speed sensor, vehicle speed sensor vss

Question
Bill, thanks a million for your quick response, but I'm confused about something:According to the parts department of my local Honda dealer, the speedometer/odometer on this vehicle is electronic sensor controlled rather than cable controlled. However, you mention a cable. I still pose my same question, though, is there something the mechanic may have forgotten to re-attach as respects the speedometer when repairing my clutch?

The clutch on my 1992 Honda Prelude SI just failed after 165,000 miles. A local repair shop near my house just installed a new clutch kit, and now the car is shifting fine again. However, just a few days after the repair, my speedometer/odometer failed, and the engine light is coming on. I find it an incredible coincidence that the speedometer/odometer failure happened just a few days after the clutch repair. Is it possible that the mechanic did something to affect the speedometer/odometer while repairing the clutch?

Chuck:
Yes it is. The cable for the speedometer/odometer goes into the transmission, which would have to come off to replace the clutch.

Answer
Chuck:
Sorry to lead you down the wrong path, I did not realize your car has an electronically controlled speedometer. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is mounted on the transaxle and would be disconnected when the clutch was replaced. It is possible that the connector was not properly re-attached and that would cause your speedometer to stop working and your check engine light to come on. It would be a strange coincidence if you VSS went bad a few days after having the clutch replaced, but still possible.
Sorry for the confusion.
