Honda Repair: 89 Prelude, flare nut, rubber line

Question
Hi Bill,

My son has a 89 Perlude 2.0 SI.  The probnlem is the Power Steering Line. It's a combination metal/rubber and it looks like one long piece. It run over the front of the motor, from drivers side to passenger side and then down around the back of the moter to the rack.  The line in front of the motor is flexible hose.  This part is leaking.

I have two questions.  (1) Is it difficult to relace this line? and (2) or, can the leaky rubber portion either be cut out to the metal line and another metal line swage-locked in or the leaky portion of the rubber line cut out and a metal line hose clamped in its place.

Thanks for any info.

John:
The line is really not too difficult to replace with a similar line; you may have some problems with a couple of the clamps that hold the line to the car. I'm not sure if you can replace a piece of the line, but you can call an auto parts store and see if they could fix it, I know they can make new lines for you. It is a hydraulic pressure line so you will have to have someone (part store) either make one or repair it for you. My line also had a leak and I was able to find another one in a junk yard for a reasonable amount, I don't think you will want to spend the money to get a new one from Honda.
Good luck.
Bill
Follow-up....
John:
The nuts that go into the rack may be a bit difficult to get off, I had to use a pair of vice grips to get them loose, a flare nut wrench just stripped the nut.
