Honda Repair: 90 ACCORD SHIFT CABLE, shift cable, eaiser

Question
MY 1990 ACCORD (auto) HAS BEEN SHIFTING OUT OF PARK VERY HARD. YESTERDAY THE "HARD SPOT" MOVED TO AROUND NUETRAL AND WHEN I PUT IT IN PARK, THE CAR WOULD BE IN REVERSE. SO I TORE APART THE CONSOLE AND FOUND THAT THE PROBLEM IS ON THE TRANSMISSON SIDE OF THE CABLE. CAN I GET THE CABLE OUT OF THE TRANSMISSON MYSELF? AND DO YOU THINK IT COULD JUST BE A BAD CABLE?     THANKS.

Answer
Mark,
Good job. You are exactly right. You have a bad cable. They get tight over time. The cables are a little tricky to replace but not too bad. Sounds like you have the knowledge to tackle it yourself. The hardest part is getting the 2 10 mm bolts out under the car behind the exhaust heat shield. Just lower the front part of the heat shield and squeze your hands up there. Its eaiser with a 1/4 inch power air ratchet.
Good luck,
Thanks for the question,
Gene

Be sure to readjust the cable when done. Adjust it inside the car at the console. Align the holes, then put the pin in.
