Hello,

My daughter has a 94 Honda Civic.  This problem just started today.  Intermittently when it is idling it will idle up and down on its own.  Goes from about 500 rpm to 1500 rpm, up and down.  Shut the car off and restart it and it idles fine, drive it and it may start doing it again.  Any ideas what it may be?

Your civic either has a bad Fast Idle valve or a bad IACV. (intake air control valve). 9 times out of 10, its the fast idle valve. Some models did not have the fast idle valve. Since you did not specify which model she has, I cant tell you if your car has one. Take the VIN to the dealer and they can tell you if you have one. Both components are fairly easy to replace.
