Honda Repair: ignition switch, shift position, position indicator

Question
My 1990 Honda Accord will sometime (often) not release the ignition key when the car is turned off. If you wait five minutes and come back the key will then release. How do I repair?

Answer
Hey Jack,

Sounds like the shift interlock system is not releasing the key. This is easy to diagnose. When the key gets stuck, turn it back on and look at the gear position indicator on the dash. If the P is not lit up, the problem is the shift position switch. Try to "wiggle" the shifter to get it to light up. The switch is on the side of the shifter(under the console). It's pretty easy to change, if you're a car guy. If not, have it done at a shop or Honda dealer.
Good luck!
