Hyundai Repair: trouble code P1330, 2002 hyundai sonata, automatic transmission trouble

Question
QUESTION: 2002 hyundai sonata v4 2.4 dohc automatic transmission trouble code P1330 came up on scanner also check engine light is on car is really sluggish less power than before engine is noisy car overdrive gear numbers are going crazy jumping from 1 to 3 to 4 to 2 when im in the normal drive gear please help

ANSWER: Hi, Charles.

P1330 is most likely unrelated to your performance issues.  The code indicates that the wire used for timing adjustment at time of manufacture has been grounded, which is in fact what is done to return the engine to base timing with no adjustments.  This wire runs between the auxiliary connector and the powertrain control module (PCM).  To check for this, unplug the PCM and check the resistance between the yellow/black wire in pin 3 of the multipurpose check connector (white connector beside the OBD-II connector) and a good ground.  If the resistance is less than 1000 Ohms, your wiring is somewhere shorted to the metal of the car.

As for your transmission problem, I'm having some difficulty understanding the issue.  Can you help me with the following:
1.  Does the noisy engine coincide with an abnormally high RPM?
2.  Can you explain what you mean by "overdrive gear number?"
3.  Does 1 to 3 to 4 to 2 indicate the gears into which the transmission shifts or something else?  Do your best to explain what is happening, providing as many details as possible.

QUESTION: hello thanks for your time 1-the rpm are normal but once i hit 60mph the engine starts to get really loud 2-on the shift knob (gearknob)there is a + and - sign i guess you use them to get more speed its a automatic 3-when i start the car the number on that shift is at 3 already when it should be on the 1 if i using that feature

Answer
Charles, I think there is an issue causing your transmission control module (TCM) to place the transmission in third gear and leave it there.  Anytime the TCM detects a condition which will prevent it from properly determining when and how to shift the transmission, it will do this.

To determine the nature of the problem, I expect you'll need to interrogate the TCM for trouble codes.  In your particular vehicle, this is part of the PCM, so I'm surprised that additional codes did not come up during the original scan.
