Hyundai Repair: Car repair, air intake hose, hyundai santa fe

Question
How do I change the plug wires on a 2001 hyundai santa fe?

Answer
Hi, Chris.  The procedure will depend on which engine you have.

On the 2.4L four cylinder, there are only two plug wires.  Remove the engine cover and simply unplug the wires from the coils and plugs to which they're attached.  Install the new wires with the same routing and reinstall the engine cover.

On the 2.7L six cylinder, things are a bit more difficult, as you'll need to remove the upper intake to access the rear three cylinders.  Because of the difficulty of and time involved in this job, I'd recommend replacing plugs and wires at the same time.  A somewhat detailed step-by-step is below.

1.  Remove engine cover.
2.  Unplug air flow sensor and remove top of air box and air intake hose.
3.  Unplug throttle position sensor, idle actuator, and air temperature sensor.
4.  Unbolt ground wire from rear of plenum.
5.  Unbolt throttle cable bracket from rear of plenum.
6.  Disconnect cables from throttle body.
7.  Remove three 12mm bolts attaching brackets to rear of plenum.
8.  Remove five 12mm bolts and two 12mm nuts attaching plenum to lower intake manifold.
9.  Lift plenum off lower intake and stand up sideways (coolant hoses are still attached to throttle body).  Use a bungee or similar device to hold the intake upright.
10.  Cover the intake runners to prevent anything from dropping in them.
11.  Make note of the plug wire routing and the cylinder numbers on the ignition coils.
12.  Remove the plug wires.
13.  Remove the spark plugs (recommended).
14.  Install new spark plugs (recommended).
15.  Install new plug wires.
16.  Remove cover from intake.
17.  Remove old plenum gasket and install new gasket.
18.  Place the plenum back down on the lower intake.
19.  Start the five bolts and two nuts but do not tighten them.
20.  Start the three bolts in the rear of the plenum and do not tighten them.
21.  Tighten the five bolts/two nuts attaching the plenum to the lower intake.
22.  Tighten the three bolts in the rear of the plenum.
23.  Attach the cables to the throttle body.
24.  Attach the throttle cable bracket to the plenum.
25.  Attach ground wire to plenum.
26.  Reconnect throttle position sensor, air temperature sensor, and idle actuator.
27.  Reinstall air box top and air intake bellows.
28.  Reconnect air flow sensor.
29.  Install engine cover.
