Hyundai Repair: fuel gage stuck on full, santa fe gls, fuel senders

Question
Have 2005 santa fe gls. fuel gage has stayed on full for more then 2 days should have moved by now. what could be the problem

Answer
Hi, Andy.  Your fuel gauge is wired in series with two fuel senders in the tank.  An open circuit should cause the gauge to read empty and a short to ground should cause it to read full.

If your gauge still has yet to move toward empty, it's likely that there's a short in the wiring or the gauge is faulty; otherwise, both senders would need to be shorted, and that's very unlikely.

If your gauge moved toward about 1/2 as the tank was near empty, then one of your sending units is likely shorted.

To test whether a sending unit is potentially shorted, remove one of the rear seats and unplug the sending unit below the access panel in the floor there.  This will create an open circuit in the sender circuit, and if the wiring is in good condition, that should cause the gauge to go to empty.
