Hyundai Repair: 2001 Sonata, air flow sensor, engine cranks

Question
I have a 2001 Sonata. It would act like it was dying when you would press on the gas and kinda die but then take off. I filled it up with gas and the next day drove about 4 miles from home and it just died. It turns over when trying to start it but nothing happens and it smells like I've flooded it. Is this a fuel pump problem?

Answer
Hi, JoAnne.  If  you smell fuel, it's a fair bet that the fuel pump is working and that the injectors are firing.

I'd recommend checking to see if the timing belt has stripped or broken, especially if the engine cranks faster than normal.

You might also check to see if the hose between the air flow sensor and throttle body is broken or loose.  If so, this can cause the hesitation you refer to or an issue with very hard starting.
