Hyundai Repair: 2005 Hyundai Elantra purge valve/charcoal canister, 2005 hyundai elantra, hyundai elantra

Question
I read your answer about purge valves, and it was very helpful.  I've had a problem with my car stalling while idling, and the dealership tells me its a problem with the purge valve, and that I need a replacement charcoal canister and purge valve (which makes sense), but that I also need a replacement fuel tank.  Why does the fuel tank need to be replaced?

Answer
Hi, Jessica.  I'm not sure why the fuel tank would need to be replaced.  Potentially, there could be some sort of physical damage to it, but I think I've only ever seen this once.

Ultimately, the dealer should be able to explain to you why each of the things they're recommending is necessary.  This is because their technician has presumably recommended them for a reason.  If you're uncomfortable with the dealership's lack of explanation of the need for the repair, speak directly with the service manager/director of the dealership.  In many cases, technicians do a poor job of explaining why repairs are needed, and when the service advisor calls you, that person also does not know why the repair is necessary.  In general, if you have a concern, the service manager will personally speak to the technician to investigate the circumstances.
