Hyundai Repair: fuel pump on 2000 sonata, fuel pump relay, sonata 2

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 Sonata that won't start. It is not getting fuel but I pulled the pump and hot wired it and it is plenty strong. So I check the power supply and I have nothing going to the pump. From what I can tell there is no relay on this model. Where might be a good starting point to look.  I thought the cam shaft sensor but if it doesn't come on with the key for 2 seconds that rules that out for cut off.  Please help in anyway you can

ANSWER: Hi, Larry.  Depending on the engine you have, you either have a fuel pump relay or a dual relay for the ECM and fuel pump behind the center of the dash.

To give you specific instructions on how to approach diagnostics on this issue, I'll need to know what engine you have in your Sonata (2.4L four cylinder or 2.5L V6).

In addition, I've got some other preliminary questions:
1.  Does the check engine lamp illuminate when you turn the ignition key to the "on" position?
2.  Did you verify that you have no power at the fuel pump when you attempt to start the vehicle, either with a test lamp or voltmeter?

QUESTION: I have a 2.4 four cylinder.  The check engine light is not on when the key is on.  I have absolutely no power going to the fuel pump with the key on.  The only power is going to the sending unit.  When you say behind the center of the dash do you mean behind the head unit not inside the passanger fuse box.

Answer
The fact that your check engine lamp does not come on most likely indicates that your ECM has not turned on.  So we should investigate the power supplies to the ECM first.

When you turn the ignition key to the "on" position, you should get power at the pink wires going to the ECM relay.  The relay is behind the trim panel which surrounds the radio.  Indeed, it won't be in the relay box, but rather bolted to the right vertical support bracket behind this trim panel.

Rather than disassemble to check at the relay first, you can check to see whether you have power at the 20A ignition coil fuse in the underhood fuse box.  If you do not have power here, there's a problem with your ignition circuit.  If you do have power here, then you should go ahead and pull the trim panel to see if you have power at the relay.  If so, the problem is most likely the relay itself, but could also be a problem with the ground circuit, which is bolted to the floorboard under the front of the console just to the right of the air bag control module.
