Hyundai Repair: 02 hyundai trani, transmission overhauls, transmission shops

Question
I bought my car 5 yrs ago and when i first got it the transmission was not shifting. I took it back and they fixed the problem but they never told me what exactly they did. I just moved to another state and about a few months ago it started slipping. The transmission sometimes takes a while to shift and when it does it jolts out of the shift. Sometimes it will stay in a low rpm and it will drive slow like 30mph and a 45mph road. I took it to a shop and they said it needs to be rebuilt or the clutches need to be replaced. what do i do?

Answer
I think you should get a second opinion, Christina.  While it's possible this diagnosis is correct, the symptoms you describe are also characteristic of a faulty input or output speed sensor.

In fact, the dealership is an excellent place for transmission diagnoses.  Since their business isn't primarily transmission overhauls and replacements (like transmission shops), they have little incentive to steer you needlessly in that direction.  Additionally, if you do need a transmission, Hyundai prices their rebuilt transmissions cheaply enough to the dealer that you may be able to purchase a factory remanufactured transmission at a price close to or cheaper that the price an outside shop would want for rebuilding the transmission themselves.
