Hyundai Repair: 2003 Hyundai Accent 1.6L DOHC, camshaft timing, crank sensor

Question
2003 Hyundai Accent has 93507 miles on it. The timing belt broke when taking off from a red light in 2nd gear. We replaced the timing belt and the camshaft pulley hole is at 12 o'clock and I can see the timing mark on the camshaft bearing cap right behind it. And the crankshaft sprocket timing mark is pointed at the timing mark (dimple) on the engine block at about 1 o'clock. All the marks line up, but the car will not start. There doesn't seem to be any spark at the plug when grounded to the block and I can't smell any gas in the engine compartment. Did the CKP sensor blow when the belt broke  or is there something else you could suggest we check?

Answer
It would be very hard to believe that you would have an issue with the crank sensor that occurred exactly simultaneously with a timing belt failure.

I have seen some cases where, due to lack of oil at the camshaft, that the camshaft will seize in the cylinder head, causing the timing belt to strip/break and/or the camshaft sprocket aligning dowel to shear off.  If the dowel sheared, you might well have the condition you have now, since the lack of proper correspondence between the cam and crank sensors can confuse the engine.  Effectively, what happens when the dowel shears, is that the camshaft is no longer properly aligned to the sprocket.  Since all your alignment marks are viewed from the sprocket, it's possible that the engine isn't timed correctly.  Typically, when this has happened, you'll be able to see a large amount of sludge in the engine or the oil level will be very low.  If you're still unsure, you can loosen the camshaft bolt just a little so it isn't clamping the camshaft sprocket, and then turn the crankshaft by hand with a wrench.  If the sprocket turns but the bolt doesn't, you know the dowel is sheared.

If you don't have the issue described above, and you've verified proper camshaft timing, you should begin checking things that would cause a no spark condition.  Does the check engine lamp come on when you turn the ignition on?  Are any of the necessary fuses blown?
