Answer
Most likely, your transmission will need to be overhauled or replaced, but there are a couple simple things that could cause this issue:

1.  Low fluid.
2.  Defective/misadjusted range switch or shift cable.
3.  Axle not engaged in transmission.

In the case of low fluid, you'll need to locate and repair the leak, and fill the transmission to the proper level with SP-III fluid.

To check the range switch and cable, monitor the indicator on the dash and compare with the gearshift position.  If the position is properly represented on the dash readout, the cable and range switch are properly adjusted and the range switch is functioning normally.

To check for a disengaged axle, watch your speedometer when you place the transmission in gear and attempt to drive.  If the axle has become disengaged, the speedometer needle will indicate speed even though you are not moving.
