Hyundai Repair: 2004 Hyundai with lots of km, tie rod ends, frequent problems

Question
I am currently looking for a good, dependable used car and have spotted a great little elantra (hatchback, 5 door) the only problem is theres about 240,000 km on it already. The salesman said this isn't a huge issue with this car as these models will easily have another 240,000 left in them..  This seems a little sketchy to me.. should I believe him?!

Answer
No, you shouldn't believe him.  Not because he's lying so much as because he really has no way of knowing how long any car will last.

If you're truly looking for something dependable, then you're not likely to be interested in any car with 240,000 km.  This is a lot of mileage for any car and you should expect cars with this amount of mileage to have problems occur periodically.

As for the 2004 Elantra in general, it's a fine car.  The most frequent problems I've seen have been with the thermostat and tie rod ends, which are small problems.  I'd just feel better if this car had 100,000 to 150,000 km instead of 240,000 km.
