Hyundai Repair: Timing belt failure causes what damage, balance shaft, failure causes

Question
The timing belt on my 2004 santa fe 4 cyl. didn't break, but the teeth on the belt are gone around the crank gear.   Do the valves collide with the pistons when this happens?   Should I assume that if the timing belt won't turn the camshafts, that the engine will need a head job?

Answer
The damage that's done depends on the position and rpm of the engine when the failure occurs.  The majority need valve replacement and perhaps a cylinder head if the valve guides are cracked.  Some just need a new timing belt (and balance shaft belt).  In very rare cases, I've seen engines where the valves broke, causing damage to the pistons and cylinder walls.  In these cases, a whole engine will be needed.
