Hyundai Repair: 2001 hyundai, hyundai accent, jerky motion

2001 hyundai accent.(automatic) Pulling out the car seems to slip in and out of 1st gear. Has a jerky motion when this is happening and the check engine light comes on. Wonder what is wrong?

This sounds like a transmission issue, but sometimes verbal descriptions are limited in how clearly they can express what is occurring.  Since the check engine lamp comes on, I'd recommend having the trouble codes scanned.  There's a very good possibility that the problem that caused the check engine lamp to come on is the same problem causing your transmission symptoms.  AAMCO and AutoZone have advertised they'll read the trouble codes for free.  I'm interested in the codes themself, not what the person scanning the vehicle thinks they indicate.
