Hyundai Repair: 2007 hyundai santa fe, hyundai santa fe, malfunction indicator light

Question
my malfunction indicator light came on today and does not go off. do you have any idea why this would happen? i bought the car new in 07 and have not had any problems with the car at all. thanks, don

Answer
Hi, Don.  There are pages of diagnostic trouble codes for this vehicle.  And for each code, the technician must still determine the specific issue.  For example, if you had code P0455 (large evaporative leak) the technician must still determine whether the purge valve is stuck shut or there is an actual leak, and if there is a leak, the location of the leak.

You could take the vehicle to AutoZone or AAMCO, which have advertised they'll read trouble codes for free, but if you have less than 60,000 miles on your Santa Fe, this exercise is probably moot, since most problems will still be covered under your factory warranty.  My advice is to simply take the car to the dealer and have them repair it under warranty.  In the unlikely event it's not a warrantable issue, consider their diagnosis and decide whether it's better to have the dealer repair it or for you to repair it on your own.
